A Most Interesting Almeria Visit

Almeria is one part of Andalucia which has vast desert-like countryside; it is known as Costa Almeria with its glory at 1000 years ago as a prominent Moorish port and an educational centre. But Almeria declined in its importance when it succumbed to earthquakes at the 12th century. However, its prominence and glory have been restored recently with financial help from the profits of modern agriculture.

Almeria hosted the Mediterranean Games in 2005 which attributed to its current fame. Although traffic is heavy in town, Almeria still offers a relaxing and charming ambience.

Historical offerings

Almeria has an old town section near its port with the Alcazaba drawing the highest number of tourists. Besides these, Almeria offers the intriguing 16th century cathedral which was built on a former mosque’s site. As the cathedral was built, Almeria was frequently attacked by the Moriscos which accounts for the presence of strong fortifications in the cathedral. The famous Immaculate Conception painting by Murillo is displayed in this cathedral with other great works of art.

Casa de los Puche lies on the cathedral’s east as the city’s oldest home from 18th century. There is also a memorial set up to commemorate some executed liberals in 1831. There is also the Olive Oil Museum and the 500-year old Santiago church in Almeria.

The Alcazaba

The Alcazaba is Almeria’s biggest and strongest hilltop attraction. This great fortress has huge walls surrounding it by about a mile long. This great Moorish defensive architecture took place near the end of the 10th century by the Caliph of Cordoba; its structure was further expanded by Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic rulers when Almeria was recaptured in 1489.

Two interesting round towers in the Christian section can be found; one of it, the Tower of Homage displays photographs while the other, Gunpowder Tower offers some panoramic views of Almeria’s famous cave homes around Barrio de la Chanca.

Other information

Almeria does not have a vibrant nightlife as most nightclubs are at the holiday resorts in the west side of town. But there are plenty of tapas bars offering gastronomic specialties such as Escabeche e Sardines, Gachas and Trigo.

Maspalomas is a beautiful holiday resort located along the south coast of Gran Canaria island. Costa del Sol Tourist Guide – Spain

Costa del Sol is among the most popular tourist destinations in Europe as this region of Spain contains a number of fine beaches, beautiful marinas, many golf courses and the perfect climate for vacations. Costa del Sol covers an area of eighty kilometers and has a number of good resorts including Puerto Banus, Marbella, Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmadena.

Previously the coastal area between Almeria and Cadiz was all under the Costa del Sol but now it is within the Malaga Province. Tourism in Costa del Sol started during the 1950s after the construction of Marbella Club by Prince Alfonso. The Marbella Club is a very good quality resort and this attracted the visitors towards this region of Spain, leading to the construction of other good resorts and hotels in the area and soon the area became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. But during the 1980s there was a decline in tourism and economy of this part but it soon recovered with the construction of marina yachts, esplanades in front of the sea and many golf courses. The quality of beaches and the number of facilities on beaches were improved to regain their development and growth.

Nejra is another beautiful resort in the region located at a distance of thirty miles from Malaga and is popular for its viewpoint called Baclon de Europa. There are a few caves as well in Nejra which are the landmarks of Costa del Sol.

Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmadena are the nearest towns from Costa del Sol and are located in the west of Province Malaga. Fuengirola is small and peaceful town and is known for its water park, beaches and small zoo. Torremolinos is famous for the wildness of its night clubs and Benalmadena is known for its beautiful marina, Tivoli World and amusement park.

Mijas pueblo is a beautiful town which is located in the bottom of the mountains at a distance of few minutes from the town of Fuengirola. This town has a famous Folk Museum and a square building.

Salamanca Tourist Guide - Castilla y Leon

Salamanca is located at a distance of two hundred kilometers from Madrid in the community of Castilla y Leon. This city has its fame for its historical university and a number of other monuments and buildings such as palaces from ancient times, cathedrals and churches. UNESCO has declared the city as a World Heritage Site on account of some of very unique and historical monuments and this city was the Cultural Capital of Europe a few years ago.

The university in the city was founded by King Alfonso IX which helped the city to develop a good reputation in the field of learning. This was the time during the 16th century, when many architectural constructions were undertaken in the city in the form of cathedrals and other buildings. During the Napoleonic War, the city was occupied by the French and re-occupied by the Duke of Wellington during the Battle of Salamanca.

There are two famous cathedrals in Salamanca: the Cathedral Vieja which is the old cathedral and the Cathedral Nueva which is the new cathedral. The construction of new cathedral was started in 1513 and it took two hundred years to finish the construction and now the building combines a very interesting mixture of Baroque and Gothic styles. The dome and the wonderful carvings about the life of Jesus are the famous features of this cathedral, while the building of old cathedral is very simple, in Romanesque design.

Plaza Mayor is no doubt the heart of Salamanca as it contains the most amazing square which has no comparison with rest of the squares in Spain. There are a number of cafes and bars along the pavements of the square and the beautiful Town Hall building of Salamanca is also located along this square. The Casa de las Conchas which is also known as the House of Shells is located near the square and another place worth visiting. The interesting thing about this villa is its front which is covered with shell carvings in stone. La Clereda Church is also located near the villa and it was constructed in the 17th century.
