Salamanca is located at a distance of two hundred kilometers from Madrid in the community of Castilla y Leon. This city has its fame for its historical university and a number of other monuments and buildings such as palaces from ancient times, cathedrals and churches. UNESCO has declared the city as a World Heritage Site on account of some of very unique and historical monuments and this city was the Cultural Capital of Europe a few years ago.

The university in the city was founded by King Alfonso IX which helped the city to develop a good reputation in the field of learning. This was the time during the 16th century, when many architectural constructions were undertaken in the city in the form of cathedrals and other buildings. During the Napoleonic War, the city was occupied by the French and re-occupied by the Duke of Wellington during the Battle of Salamanca.

There are two famous cathedrals in Salamanca: the Cathedral Vieja which is the old cathedral and the Cathedral Nueva which is the new cathedral. The construction of new cathedral was started in 1513 and it took two hundred years to finish the construction and now the building combines a very interesting mixture of Baroque and Gothic styles. The dome and the wonderful carvings about the life of Jesus are the famous features of this cathedral, while the building of old cathedral is very simple, in Romanesque design.

Plaza Mayor is no doubt the heart of Salamanca as it contains the most amazing square which has no comparison with rest of the squares in Spain. There are a number of cafes and bars along the pavements of the square and the beautiful Town Hall building of Salamanca is also located along this square. The Casa de las Conchas which is also known as the House of Shells is located near the square and another place worth visiting. The interesting thing about this villa is its front which is covered with shell carvings in stone. La Clereda Church is also located near the villa and it was constructed in the 17th century.

Salamanca University is famous for the many big names who studied in the university like location catalogne Herman Cortes and Miguel de Cervantes. Next to this university is located the gorgeous Patio de Escuelas which is famous for its beautiful façade.
